The department said because units at the complex are tied down, crews worked on the ground to prevent the fire from spreading to other units.

Numerous used needles were found inside the burning apartment, the department said, and the fire was brought under control by 10:25 p.m.

A fire investigator determined the unit was vacant but unsecured and someone was seen in the unit around 6:30 p.m. The investigator had the unit secured before leaving.

Anyone with information relating to the fire is asked to contact the Saskatoon Police Department at (306) 975-8300.
