A new 55+ condominium community will be developed in Saranac

SARANAC – A condominium community is coming to the village of Saranac in County Ionia – serving as a residence for people aged 55 and over.

West Michigan-based Mark Schaafsma Design Build will develop the Harker Place condominium community at 234 Vosper St. — according to a press release. The building, which was once Harker Middle School, is 60,000 square feet and will house approximately 30 one- and two-bedroom condominiums.

Facilities will include garages with interior walkways, a community room, exercise room, private patios and a virtually maintenance-free habitat.

“Seniors are looking for the ability to stay in their communities without the upkeep and upkeep of a traditional home, and we are thrilled to offer this option for the first time in Saranac,” said builder Mark Schaafsma. “We designed these condos with thoughtful features such as step-free entrances and additional options and services so their homes will continue to serve residents for a long time to come.”

Schaafsma bought the building in 2019 and intended to turn it into an assisted living and memory care facility, but the COVID-19 pandemic put his plans on hold. The direction of the project then changed.

“We went quite far in the planning process, partnering with a senior housing company in Grand Rapids before the pandemic hit,” Schaafsma said. “COVID has really changed the landscape of the aged care industry and their ability to staff facilities. We made the difficult decision to go in a different direction with the building because we didn’t want to keep the community waiting.

Expect Moore Premier Properties to be the exclusive listing agent and began sales in June, according to the statement. Buyers can choose their units early.

“Over $1.5 million in anticipated sales shows that buyers in Saranac and area are excited to move into a quality condominium located in the community they love and where they grew up or raised their families,” said Kevin Moore of Expect Moore. “The fact that they can customize their finishes and comfortably live an active, social life in the heart of this community is appealing to buyers.”
